Improv for Evil, certainly Austin’s most infamous improv group, and one of the best, is doing a show on Friday, March 14, 10pm at the Hideout. They’ll be making up a musical to music that I’m going to pick out and loop up for them, all live and without a net.

Should be an insane amount of fun.

It’s at the Hideout, 10pm, $10.

Mel’s Ongoing Conquest of the World…

… continues, this month in the pages of American Airline’s in-flight magazine, American Way.

Then Melicious transforms from fashion critic to derby historian, a job she first took on when she decided to write Rollergirl. Obsessed with chronicling the sport’s past, she spent months doing research and even rounded up team rosters from early-day bouts — which is no mean feat. She met a few of the stars of the ’50s and ’60s derbies, tough women who don’t hesitate to acknowledge the sometimes brutal side effects of their sport. (“What do you think this is? Tiddledywinks?” one said in an interview.) “They were so excited we were bringing the sport back,” Melicious says.

And, hey! – I got name-dropped:

She and her husband, a fellow musician called Dave the Body by the other Rollergirls, have a backyard studio: Her keyboards, computer, and red-velvet sofa are in the studio’s front room; his guitars and whatnot are in the back.

So famous!

Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus

So, I finally caught up with this flick last weekend.

Here’s how I imagine that movie got made.

A couple of British guys, they get ahold of the Jim White album, “Wrong-Eyed Jesus.” It’s so intriguing, so steeped in Louisiana, that they call him and say, “Hey, listen, would you mind showing us around the South?”

And he says, “the real South?”

And they say, “Sure.”

So they get down there, and they rent a 1970 beater Chevy for $100 a day from one of Jim’s neighbors because, as Jim says, “You can’t drive a black SUV around the South and expect people to tell you the truth.” (This is not speculation. There’s film of this.)

And so they drive around Louisiana, looking for the truth. They visit a couple of churches, a few diners, a prison. And they find some, mostly coming out of the mouths of people who don’t have all of their teeth.

While they’re doing this, Jim calls his musician friends, and they decide to shoot them singing their songs in various places around the South: sitting in a booth in a diner, sitting on a bed in a hotel, and, memorably, standing on the porch of a shack that seems to be in the middle of a lake. And they intercut this with people talking about their lives, and their battles with good and evil and boredom.

“Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus” is available from Netflix and Amazon. Recommended.

amazon’s mp3 store

Also good for the ‘music browsing and listening’ (mentioned recently) … Amazon’s MP3 store.

2 million songs, slightly cheaper than iTunes, and, most importantly, DRM free. (Which means that you can take the songs and play them anywhere, unlike the iTunes store, which tries to limit the number of machines you can play their songs on.)

They just come out with their Linux mp3 downloader, and they’ve had Windows and Mac clients for a while now.
